Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Captures 2025-26 NBA MVP After Historic Thunder Season
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has officially cemented his place among the NBA’s elite after securing the 2025-26 NBA Most Valuable Player award for the second consecutive season. The Oklahoma City Thunder superstar once again dominated the league, edging out Victor Wembanyama and Nikola Jokić in the final MVP voting race.
The back-to-back triumph makes Gilgeous-Alexander the first player since Jokić’s 2021 and 2022 run to win consecutive MVP trophies, further solidifying his status as the face of the Thunder franchise.
According to reports from Shams Charania, Gilgeous-Alexander comfortably led the voting after collecting 83 first-place votes following another sensational campaign with Oklahoma City.
Fresh off delivering the Thunder their 2025 NBA championship, the 27-year-old elevated his game even further during the regular season. Oklahoma City finished with the league’s best record at 64-18 despite dealing with major injury setbacks, including extended absences for star forward Jalen Williams, who featured in only 33 games because of a lingering wrist problem.
Even with defensive attention constantly focused on him, Gilgeous-Alexander remained unstoppable offensively. He averaged 31.1 points per game while shooting a career-best 55.3 percent from the field, marking his fourth consecutive season averaging over 30 points per night.
The Thunder guard also produced several unforgettable performances throughout the year, including an explosive 55-point outing in a double-overtime thriller against the Indiana Pacers.
Still, the MVP battle was far from easy.
Wembanyama pushed Gilgeous-Alexander all season long after leading the San Antonio Spurs to an outstanding 62-20 record. The French superstar captured his first Defensive Player of the Year award in unanimous fashion while averaging 25.0 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 3.1 blocks per game.
Meanwhile, Jokić continued to rewrite history with the Denver Nuggets. The Serbian center averaged another triple-double season with 27.7 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 10.7 assists, becoming the first player in NBA history to lead the league in both rebounds and assists during the same campaign.
Despite the fierce competition, voters ultimately rewarded Gilgeous-Alexander for leading the NBA’s top team while maintaining elite scoring efficiency and consistency throughout the season.
Now, with another MVP trophy added to his résumé, the Thunder superstar will turn his attention toward chasing a second straight NBA championship and continuing Oklahoma City’s rise as the league’s newest powerhouse.
