Norman Powell Calls Los Angeles Lakers NBA’s Most Overrated Team Despite Major Offseason Changes
The Los Angeles Lakers have generated plenty of attention following an aggressive offseason roster overhaul, but not everyone is convinced the changes will turn them into genuine championship contenders.
Chicago Bulls guard Norman Powell is among the skeptics.
During a recent livestream appearance with content creator N3on, Powell was asked which NBA team he considers the most overrated. His answer was straightforward: the Lakers.
It is a bold assessment considering Los Angeles has spent the offseason reshaping its supporting cast around Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves, adding several players who could address weaknesses from last season.
However, Powell's opinion highlights a larger question surrounding the Lakers heading into the new campaign: Does an improved roster automatically make Los Angeles a serious threat in an increasingly difficult Western Conference?
Lakers Make Significant Changes Around Luka Dončić
Los Angeles has been busy constructing a roster better suited to playing alongside Dončić.
Among the Lakers' notable additions are Walker Kessler, Quentin Grimes, Sandro Mamukelashvili and Collin Sexton.
Each brings something different to the rotation.
Sexton provides another aggressive scorer who can attack the basket and generate offense. Grimes offers perimeter shooting and defensive versatility, while Mamukelashvili gives Los Angeles additional frontcourt depth.
But perhaps the most intriguing addition is Kessler.
The big man could become an important piece of the Lakers' new-look system, particularly because of how naturally his skill set could complement Dončić.
Walker Kessler Could Be Lakers' Biggest X-Factor
Dončić has consistently shown how dangerous he can be when paired with an athletic interior target capable of finishing above the rim.
That makes Kessler particularly interesting.
His size and finishing ability could give Dončić another effective option in pick-and-roll situations, with Kessler providing a legitimate lob threat around the basket.
His defensive impact may be even more important.
Los Angeles needs greater resistance around the rim, and Kessler has the potential to provide the shot-blocking and interior presence required to strengthen the Lakers defensively.
If that combination works as intended, Kessler could become one of the most important players on the roster despite not carrying the same star status as Dončić or Reaves.
Los Angeles Still Has Plenty to Figure Out
The Lakers may look stronger on paper, but assembling talented players and creating a championship-level team are two different challenges.
Los Angeles has added several new faces at once.
That means rotations will need to be established, roles must become clear and the coaching staff will have to determine which combinations work best around Dončić.
There is also the question of chemistry.
Sexton is accustomed to having the ball in his hands. Dončić will naturally command a significant portion of the offense, while Reaves also needs opportunities as a creator.
Finding the right balance between those players could determine whether the Lakers' offensive talent translates into consistent winning basketball.
The potential is certainly there.
So are the unanswered questions.
Western Conference Remains the Lakers' Biggest Problem
Even if Los Angeles successfully integrates its new additions, simply becoming better may not be enough.
The Western Conference presents an extremely difficult road to the NBA Finals.
Most notably, the Lakers would potentially have to contend with the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs.
Both represent significant obstacles for different reasons, and the overall depth of the West leaves little margin for error.
That is what makes the expectations surrounding Los Angeles particularly interesting.
The Lakers do not necessarily have to be a bad team for Powell's "overrated" assessment to eventually look reasonable.
They could improve considerably and still struggle to emerge from the Western Conference.
Lakers Have a High Ceiling — But Also Plenty to Prove
On paper, there are legitimate reasons for optimism in Los Angeles.
Dončić remains the centerpiece around whom the entire roster can be constructed.
Reaves provides another established offensive weapon, while Kessler, Grimes, Sexton and Mamukelashvili give the Lakers considerably different options around their core.
If the pieces fit together quickly, Los Angeles could possess one of the higher ceilings in the conference.
But offseason excitement does not guarantee postseason success.
The Lakers still need to demonstrate that their revamped roster can defend at a high level, establish chemistry and consistently compete against the West's strongest teams.
Powell clearly isn't ready to crown them based purely on their offseason moves.
His comments will only add another storyline to what was already shaping up to be a fascinating season in Los Angeles.
The Lakers have assembled the talent to challenge the Western Conference.
Now they have to prove the hype is justified.
